4.5.5 Ballistic test (M103). Rocket motors shall be ballistically tested in accordance with
4.5.5.1 and 4.5.5.2 (see 3.4).
4.5.5.1 Test setup. The rocket motor shall be mounted on a test stand, equipped with a
recording oscillograph and instrumentation for recording thrust and time. The motor shall be
fired not greater than 15 minutes after removal from the conditioning chamber. If this time limit
is exceeded, the motors shall be reconditioned 2 minutes for every minute over 15 that the out of
specification condition exists, or not greater than 8 hours. Motors shall be fired by energizing the
igniter circuit with 28 volts dc at 7 +0.5, -0.0 amperes.
4.5.5.2 Instrumentation. All measurements shall be made with instruments and systems
with a total system accuracy, reproducibility, and frequency response that has been approved by
the procuring activity.
5. PACKAGING
5.1 Packaging. For acquisition purposes, the packaging requirements shall be as specified
in the contract or order (see 6.2). When actual packaging of material is to be performed by DoD
or in-house contractor personnel, these personnel need to contact the responsible packaging
activity to ascertain packaging requirements. Packaging requirements are maintained by the
Inventory Control Point's packaging activities within the Military Service or Defense Agency, or
within the military service's system commands. Packaging data retrieval is available from the
managing Military Department's or Defense Agency's automated packaging files, CD-ROM
products, or by contacting the responsible packaging activity.
6. NOTES
(This section contains information of a general or explanatory nature that may be helpful,
but is not mandatory.)
6.1 Intended use. The rocket motors provide auxiliary thrust to launch, from either
ground or ship, the BQM-74C target drone. The rocket motors were developed specifically for
this purpose and have no commercial application.
6.2 Acquisition requirements. Acquisition documents should specify the following:
a. Title, number, and date of the specification.
b. Mark and Mod of the rocket motor.
c. Inspection conditions, if other than as specified (see 4.2).
d. Whether first article is required (see 4.3 and 6.3).
e. Packaging (see 5.1 and 6.4).
f. That the safety precaution requirements of the "Contractor's Safety Manual for
